Once a lower noble in Russia, during Ivan the Terrible's reign, Anatoly was attacked in his sleep by a starving vampire, in the cruel Russian winter. He woke up in the morning covered in blood, but uninjured. One of his maids, in panic, opened the curtains to make seeing potential injuries easier. But the sunrays burned the left side of her master's neck and face, leaving him one-eyed and with a permanent scar. His vampiric survival instincts kicking in, Anatoly closed the curtains, killed the woman, and drank her blood to satisfy his hunger. He then killed the witnesses, keeping their bodies for later. He completely isolated himself after the incident, letting his name disappear from the Russian nobility.
🦇 Meeting Elias 🦇
As Anatoly was visiting the first Universal Exposition (London, 1851) at night, during closing hours, he noticed he wasn't alone. He waited in the shadows, hoping to have a feast. But as the visitor grew closer, he noticed their scent was not human. That's when he saw a tall black-haired man with greyish skin and bright red eyes; a fellow vampire. He was spoken to in English, but didn't understand; he hadn't bothered learning a new language during his isolation. But then the man spoke French. Anatoly's was rusty, but it was enough to communicate. Elias was friendly. They talked for a while. Then the Frenchman proposed to stick together and the Russian accepted. It was good to have company. Elias helped him grow more and more stable mentally. They escaped all the wars together, fleeing wherever need be. Elias taught him English, but they learned many more languages during their travels. They became a couple in 1926, during the Roaring Twenties.

In 1999, Elias and Anatoly were in a rave in Berlin. Raves were the perfect place for vampires: it was dark, there were loads of people and everyone was too high to notice something was off with them. And so, the couple wasn't alone. From the side, they noticed a vampire going to the bathroom with a girl and leaving alone. They went to the bathroom to get rid of the body, but instead found the girl unconscious in a stall, between life and death, starting to transform. They took her under their care, knowing too well how awful of an experience it is to be alone as a vampire. The three of them became a polyamorous couple in 2006, after a passionate rave.
